Live lice in the hair

This can be sometimes hard to detect as they do move about and can live anywhere on the hair. They are usually only found on the scalp when feeding, which they do every 3-4 hours. Otherwise, they live and move about on the hair shafts. Finding live lice means an infestation is present and appropriate treatment is required.

 Nits on the hair shaft.

This method is not always the most reliable unless you know what you are looking for. Whereas, it is obvious that there is a head lice infestation when you find a live creature crawling through the hair, there are other ‘things’ in the hair that often cause confusion for many people, making diagnosis of a lice infestation a little tricky.

If you find nits on just one child, check all other children and the adults in the household. Detection and treatment for all those affected should be carried out on the same day in order to greatly reduce the risk of re-infestation.

Hair Casts
People can also mistake hair casts (dandruff) and hair spray droplets for nits. But, if it comes off easily, or flakes off, it is not a nit.

DEC Plugs
People who have been treated for lice over an excessive amount of time (or used a variety of chemical based other hair treatments ie. hair dyes, shampoos/conditioners etc) can develop DEC plugs (Desquamated Epithelial Cells.)

This is oil produced by the scalp compensating for excessive dryness. DEC plugs can be the result of too many pediculicidal treatments. They are white, greasy clumps stuck to a hair shaft and they usually stick all the way around the hair shaft instead of being attached at an angle to one side.
